Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. I never will forget the way you look tonight.
WORDS
This new Willow Nightingale painting for me was a fun look at having an intention for a piece and then getting out of the way to let it be what it wants to be. See, I’d originally intended for the pink areas to be solid throughout, giving it a more illustrative feel. But as I was working I saw that wasn’t best for this and that I should instead lean into letting it be the watercolor painting it should be. I think those gradations and brushstrokes give it more life and energy and speak more to Willow’s overall vibe.
It’s something I try to be mindful of with my art, that what I originally have in mind isn’t always the best path, and to allow myself to spot said better path.

ART I LIKE
‘In the Cafe’ by Fernand Lungren
I admit to not only being unaware of this painting, but of Lungren himself. But when we were walking through the Art Institute of Chicago this piece stopped me in my tracks. The color palette, how they’re incorporated into the overall composition, the story it tells, all of it sucked me right in.
The woman in the red dress is the obvious focal point, but it’s almost more about the dress than the woman herself. While monochromatic, in detail you can see the amount of care taken with both it and the hat’s depiction. All of that, while the woman’s facial features are barely represented.
I’m also intrigued by the man in the top hat sitting just outside the door, reading his paper. Such a fun little detail, in addition to the two other men sitting behind him.
Fierce jungle creatures.
IMPORTANT TIGER FORCE UPDATE
Look at those gorgeous faces! They like to hunt together, telling the birds and squirrels and bunnies outside to eff right off. However, they sometimes like to do so from my drawing table, as pictured above, which hinders productivity. The sacrifices we make to be safe from those damn rabbits!
Love you more,
Rob
