Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Sun is the same, in a relative way, but you're older.
WORDS
Sometimes and idea for a painting is the obvious one and you just let it sing, and that’s what happened with this Timeless Toni Storm piece. I’m a big fan of classic movies and especially their promotional photos (raise your hand if you’ve also been to a Clarence Sinclair Bull exhibition!), so a lot of that visual language is fully internalized in my head. The fun is in adding the smeared red lipstick to make an impact. I also put a little into the background to balance the composition while not taking the focus away from where I want your eyes to go.

‘Hollywood’ by Thomas Hart Benton
ART I LIKE
Growing up in the Kansas City suburbs, I naturally fell in love with the works of our city’s arguably greatest artist Thomas Hart Benton. Several of his works are on display at the Nelson-Atkins Museum and I make a point to spend time with them whenever I go there. The color, the movement, the stylization, the complexity of it all and what each piece makes me think and feel, it keeps me engaged.
The above piece, ‘Hollywood’ is a full-on masterpiece. Total perfection and a marvel to see in person.
‘Poker Night (from A Streetcar Named Desire) by Thomas Hart Benton
Benton was an imperfect man and fairly disliked by his contemporaries, a feeling he seemed to share for them in return. His work at the time was considered low-brow in art circles, but it’s their emotional authenticity that rings true through the decades.
‘The Sources of Country Music’ by Thomas Hart Benton
This was his final painting, made for the National Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The staff from the museum came to his home here in Kansas City with a bottle of whiskey and after they had finished it off he finally agreed to do the piece. Legend has it that he dropped dead with his brush in his hand as he was about to sign it upon completion. The painter’s equivalent of dying on stage.
I know that seems morbid but it’s actually beautiful from my perspective, doing what he truly loved all the way up to his final moment.
Had some perfect overcast lighting coming in from the window and took advantage of it!
FOOD, DUDE!
I made this fantastic egg salad (in this economy?!?) for my lunches this past week from the sauce I used for my breakfast burritos I told you about last Thursday. Katy’s calling that ‘Scham Sauce’ now, which is hilarious. Here’s what I did:
PICKLED ONION INGREDIENTS
1/4 of a red onion, chopped
1/2 cup white wine vinegar (I used my own homemade vinegar for this and it’s fabulous)
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup cane sugar
1/2 tbsp salt
4 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
Place the chopped onions and garlic in a mason jar. Heat up the vinegar, water, sugar and salt in a small saucepan and mix until the sugar and salt dissolve, about one minute. Pour into the jar and let it sit until it reaches room temperature. Then put on the jar’s lid and refrigerate. You can use this in about an hour, but I made this part a day ahead to really let the flavor set in.
Next, I hardboiled six eggs (in this economy?!?). While that was going on I made the Scham Sauce:
SAUCE INGREDIENTS
1 cup avocado mayo
1 lime, squeezed and zested
4 cloves of fresh garlic, minced
2 tbsp chipotle peppers in adobo sauce
Add all of these sauce ingredients into a food processor and mix for about 20 seconds. Pour into a medium mixing bowl and add the pickled onions, a couple spoonfuls of dill pickle relish and mix.
Once the eggs are peeled, roughly chop them up and mix them in as well.
It’s tangy and acidic and spicy and creamy and OMG so good. Highly recommend. Katy can’t stand hard boiled eggs (it’s a texture thing for her) but she wants to use this to make chicken salad which should work perfectly as well. I bet jackfruit would be excellent, too.
Love you more,
Rob
