Now that we’re in WrestleMania season, let’s take a look back at when I made this Macho Man Randy Savage painting on actual ring canvas at WM31 in San Jose. (Do we call it ‘WrestleMania 31’ or ‘WrestleMania Play Button’? I think either is acceptable.)
I’d had the idea to do this prior to Axxess and reached out to WWE Archivist Ben Brown to see if it was doable and he came through like a champ, giving me two stretched ring canvases. Since Savage was being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame that year I thought it was the perfect time and place to do this to honor him. Ben is responsible for the memorabilia exhibits that you see at Axxess and he surprised me by letting me know that this specific gear was there, so I got to go study it up close to make sure I got the finer parts right. How cool, right?
I don’t know what event the ring canvas was used at, but it was for sure legit from a WWE show. I’ve still got the other blank canvas all of these years later, waiting for just the right moment to use it.
Love you more,
Rob
