Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Survival got me buggin’ but I’m alive on arrival.
WORDS
Sometimes as an artist I get out of my head, get out of my own way and let a good painting happen and that’s what happened with this new Swerve Strickland piece. I’ve been experimenting with a new palette of colors and they clicked here, making something I feel captures the spirit of Swerve.
As you’ve seen over the past couple years I’ve been pushing myself hard to get to another level with my art and I’m confident that happened here. Hope you dig it.

ART I LIKE
A week or so back on Bluesky there was a prompt going around asking people to share four stills from a movie they consider a visual masterpiece and my mind immediately went to Black Narcissus (1947). It’s widely-considered to be the greatest example of what Technicolor was capable of and I’m one of the people who think that way.
It was all shot at Pinewood Studio and not on location, so it’s gorgeous and vast scenery was all made by blowing up photographs and then artisans went over it all with pastels to get those lush colors. A handmade marvel whose like we don’t see anymore.
The figures were also all lit to look like the paintings of Vermeer and the Dutch Masters, giving it a weight and power that stays with you for decades after seeing it.
It’s about a group of British nuns who take over a mountaintop monastery in India, whose hubris leads to their ultimate downfall as they don’t understand the terrain nor the people in it but try to force it to work. It’s a metaphor for the decline of British imperialism at a time that it was in its final days following the restructuring of the world following WWII. There’s also a lot of echoes for today’s world.
But really it’s the arresting visuals that stuck with me and the way they made me feel. If you want to bask in some genuine beauty for a couple hours, it’s streaming on Max. Worth your time!
Gonna eat that sum’bitch in a few months.
IMPORTANT GARDEN UPDATE
My first bell pepper of the season is now confirmed to be coming in! Always a thrill when the first one hits. Lookin’ like I’ll have about a dozen coming in this time next week so I’m hopeful for a good-sized crop this year.
If you’re unfamiliar, once the pepper reaches its full size it’ll stay green for a while and then gradually shift color to red or yellow when it reaches full maturity. The longer you leave it on the sweeter it gets, although the squirrels get interested once they turn red so it’s good to pick them then.
The green peppers with their distinctive flavor you buy in the store are picked as soon as they reach full size, but one that’s stayed on the plant for a month or so will actually taste like a store-bought red bell pepper even though it’s still green. And man, when they turn red the flavor is so much richer than what you get in the store. If you’ve ever had farm eggs you know there’s a difference in flavor versus the store, and it’s for sure the same with garden vegetables.
Love you more,
Rob
