Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. I never saw the sun shinin' so bright.
WORDS
For my first-ever Skye Blue painting I thought it’d be fun to use her hair as a framing device for her features. It breaks up the composition and also allows me to go a little subtler with the skin tones, giving it a haunting effect that plays into her persona. Sometimes you don’t have to do a lot to say a lot with a painting.

ART I LIKE
‘Fish, Fruits, and Flowers’ by Katryn E Cherry, 1923
On Sunday Katy and I went to the St Louis Art Museum for the first time (more on that in the next newsletter) and I was possibly the most moved by this painting. Like, I never thought I would say that I was thrilled by a still life, but bah gahd I sure am. It’s something that feels like it was made today and not over a century ago and as an artist as well as a fan of art it’s THRILLING when that happens.
The Impressionistic brushstrokes and bold colors were definitely of their time, although the more primary-color-leaning palette is unlike the pastel palettes of that time. Also an incredible attention to multiple details, like in each grape or the reflections in the fishbowl keep the eye moving and engaged.
And look at the Japanese-inspired illustration on the flower vase and how it’s portrayed in her style yet still distinct from the flowers. That’s super cool to see.
Speaking of, the bit that truly caught my attention was how she depicted the Japanese tapestry hanging behind the still life. It’s the kind of juxtaposition of cultures and visual languages that made this feel like it was a century ahead of its time and that I found so positively thrilling to see. Feels more like a Soey Milk or Kent Williams painting in today’s gallery scene than something from 1920’s suburban St Louis, MO.
KAPOW!
IMPORTANT GARDEN UPDATE
At the beginning of spring I planted a couple of these firework grasses in the front yard and they starting to, pun intended, explode. This one’s about three feet high now and the other is two to two and a half feet as it doesn’t get as much sun. They’re a gorgeous mix of green and a startling reddish purple, giving a nice mix of color to the landscape. They’ll get around five feet tall with some cattails as well. Unfortunately they’re not perennials but something this wonderful is right to only last a year, I guess.
Love you more,
Rob
