Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Better think of your future.
WORDS
This Sami Zayn piece is a fun example of how inspiration comes from unusual places sometimes. I was watching Sami dance during an entrance and I thought, “Hey, I could do this like Marcel Duchamp’s famous staircase painting!” I mean, everyone thinks about cubism when they watch WWE, right?
Right?
Just me?
So what I did was draw him over and over, layered up on himself showing off the dance moves with some Duchamp-inspired colors throughout. One of the figures was done with watercolor and the rest of the composition was done with liquid acrylic, to help give you something to focus on that makes the whole thing pop into place. This is really unlike anything I’ve done before and I’m extra excited for how it turned out!
ICYMI, here's last week's Canvas 2 Canvas episode. Tomorrow's will go up on WWE's YouTube channel at 11AM CST!

SCHAMBERGER LABS: THE SERIES! SEASON THREE!
The penultimate episode! I paint everything EXCEPT Roman Reigns in the next-to-last episode of this season, including for my first time ever: Ring steps! We're almost there, friend. It's happening.
The final painting debuts on Thursday and you’ll get exclusive access to numbered prints!
FYI, this coming week I’ll (finally) get the Undertaker remarqued prints done and get to work on these as well. THANK YOU for your patience and understanding. The past few months have been nutso.
WHAT I LIKED RECENTLY
QUICK HITS STYLE:
The new season of the TCM podcast The Plot Thickens focusing on Pam Grier is tremendous so far. I met her once after doing a poster for a screening of Jackie Brown and she was marvelous.
The audiobook for Star Trek: Die Standing by John Jackson Miller was thoroughly fun. It’s an inversion of the classic spy novel tropes but done through the perspective of Emperor Philippa Georgiou on her first mission for the secretive Section 31. Highly recommended!
Finally an English translation for Shuna’s Journey by Hayao Miyazaki came out and it’s as magical and wonderful as you would expect a fully-painted original Miyazaki graphic novel to be.
Ms. Tree: Deadline by Max Allan Collins and Terry Beatty is the latest collection of the classic crime comic series. I love these, although I kinda wish they’d been collected sequentially as it gets jarring from time to time.
I was excited to read One-Star Squadron by Mark Russell and Steve Lieber and it didn’t disappoint, but a superhero comedy by these two was guaranteed to be outstanding.
YOU GOOD?
My week was a bit of a blur, between getting back into the groove and all of the related work responsibilities that are associated. I opted to work through last Sunday to finish up this week’s Sami piece, and then spent Monday and Tuesday finishing up the Roman Reigns Wrestling Landscape painting. Tuesday evening I had a meeting with the client for the Big Important Secret Project to go over a few finishing revisions, and then Wednesday was focused on doing those.
Thursday I hit the road for Indianapolis so that I could work SmackDown on Friday. It was a pretty standard day at WWE, with the two exciting things being that the former catering company we all loved is back and finally getting to catch up with Bray Wyatt. Wyndham and I came into the company around the same time and hit it off from the first time we met. It was really great catching up, laughing, and sharing our favorite stories about Brodie with each other.
My personal favorite time with Jon was at a house show here in Kansas City when, working as Luke Harper right before he went out with the rest of the Wyatt Family he announced to all of us that he was going to do his entire match as Hulk Hogan. He did all the moves, the mannerisms, which the crowd ate up but we were losing our minds backstage laughing at it. I miss that dude.
Saturday I hit the road back to town at sunrise and about three hours west on I-70 traffic completely stopped and the highway turned into a giant parking lot for three hours. So, listen, here I am, I 42 year old man and in case you’re wondering yes, I’ve now peed in a cup in a car for the first time. Not my finest moment but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
Now I’m back with Katy and the cats though, as well as indoor plumbing.
Love you more,
Rob
