WORDS
While I’ve made several paintings of this woman, here’s my first painting of the new TBS Champion Mercedes Mone! It’s fun revisiting a favorite subject and bringing a lot of the things I’ve learned from all of the work I’ve done of her over the years to this new piece and new era.
Everything that came before simply got us to where we are now. What we do now is where the excitement lives.

TRAVEL ART
I just spent the past couple weeks traveling around Florence, Italy and the Tuscan countryside for an art retreat. Took a little time away to learn some new holds! I’ll send a couple bonus emails over the next week talking about this life-changing and life-affirming trip, but in the meantime here’s some smaller paintings I made during my flights and as warm-ups. I was on an art vacation from my art job and made art in my free time. Yup.
Above is a 6x9 watercolor of Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa. Penciled in Kansas City and painted in (the airport in) France and finished in our converted Tuscan farmhouse that was a few hundred years older than the formation of America. What a sentence! I’m planning to see the movie as I LOVED Fury Road, but I was, like, busy elsewhere.
Here’s a 7x10 of Jane Russell done with a parallel pen and water-soluble ink. I did this as a warmup in our upstairs studio before working with our models.
A 7x10 watercolor of Greta Garbo done as a warmup in the Tuscan studio. In an alternate universe I only make paintings of Garbo and it’s fabulous.
A 7x10 watercolor of Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshii Toranaga in Shogun. Started in the Tuscan studio and completed on our Florence hotel’s rooftop patio. Really, really happy with this one.
Parallel pen and water-soluble ink of Anna May Wong on 7x10 watercolor paper. Started on the hotel’s rooftop patio and finished later around midnight in the room while watching a 70’s Italian XXX film that was, like, just on TV. Yo, Italian TV is WILD.
I’m still not convinced that any of this was real.
YOU GOOD?
We got home late Tuesday night after around 24 hours of travel, so I’m writing this on Wednesday while trying to adjust to jet lag and wrap my head around the past two weeks.
I’m taking the mindset that this Italy trip is how I’ll formally separate these chapters of my life, ending a decade-plus professional relationship on one side and focusing on what comes next on this other side. Like, I didn’t just come back home but I stepped into a new era. I’m informed by my past, not defined by it. I live in my present and I’m working towards my future.
I’m glad to have you here with me, working together.
Love you more,
Rob
