Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Consciousness, my only friend.
WORDS
With this Josh Alexander painting I thought it’d be fun to pull back the curtain and share some of my process with you. So often with my work I’m trying to find a way in to the piece, whether it be a conceptual idea or a color palette or a visual approach, anything I can latch onto to guide me through it. Here, I liked the jagged lightning bolt-esque pattern on his gear and repeated that as a design element in the background. That felt a little disjointed at first so I added the cast shadow to give it a sense of space and depth, making the entire composition come into focus. Fun one to make!

ART I LIKE
‘Pardon in Brittany’ by Gaston La Touche
It’s the subtlety of this that sucks me in. It looks like a bunch of blobs of pretty colors at first glance with a woman on horseback in the upper left corner. But it’s those little glows of warm light that makes it come into focus and the use of composition is suddenly brilliant. The light blues are the bonnets/hats of the people on the pilgrimage and the little spots of light are their candles shining through here and there, all against the pink of a setting sun.
The complexity of minimalism is seeing how much you can say with as little rendering as possible. Like, each stroke has to be exactly right or nothing is right, even when it’s done in an Impressionistic manner like this painting. Lovely, lovely piece.
Let’s talk about my Sweaty Bells.
IMPORTANT GARDEN UPDATE
The bell peppers are coming in strong so far. We had about a week of solid rain followed by a week of solid sunshine in the 70’s and 80’s, and now about another week of rain settling in. Good start to their season. Around 20 peppers at various stages of growth so far. Not anywhere close to a peck of peppers, in case you were going to ask, but there might be a peck or two by the end of the season the way they’re coming in.
Only about a half of my pepper plants are fruiting so far and they’re all still in their growth cycles so I’m hopeful for what
Love you more,
