Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. I’ll give you everything I have in my hand.
WORDS
There was a moment during Iyo Sky’s entrance for her debut Raw match, when she pushes her hair back while standing on the ring ropes where I said, “Yup, that’s my next painting of her. The lighting, the colors, the energy, her look and her swagger all demanded I make this piece.
This was completely made with watercolor (except a touch of masking fluid, later removed to reveal the white of the paper), giving the whole piece an ethereal quality I’m partial to.
ICYMI, here's last week's Canvas 2 Canvas episode. Tomorrow's will go up on WWE's YouTube channel at 11AM CST!

NOW ENTERING THE RING...My Wrestling Landscape painting of The Undertaker takes the next step as I bring you through my process for painting the wrestling ring portion of this epic composition!
Here’s what it looks like so far:
It gets REALLY exciting from here on out. Trust me on this. Other than all of the times I’ve steered you wrong, have I ever steered you wrong?

WHAT I LIKED LAST WEEK
Yesterday morning I read Alien: Revival by Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Salvador Larroca, and it hits the head on getting the Alien concept right. A religious settlement gets a Xenomorph infestation and it balances social commentary (religious zealots not believing the scientists, even though it will lead to a massive amount of death SOUNDS KIND OF FAMILIAR) with survivalist body horror action.
TANGENT: My favorite Alien stories are where they introduce a horror monster to another genre and/or archetype. For instance, Alien is a sci-fi, Aliens is action/adventure and Aliens 3 is a prison drama. Another notable is the David Lloyd comic Glass Corridor, which is a crime story. A notable runner-up is Alien vs Predator Requiem, a teen slasher movie. Actually a pretty fun movie!
We finished watching Paper Girls Season One the other night and loved it a lot. I’m a big fan of the books by Brian K Vaughn and Cliff Chiang, as well as producers and co-writers Chris Rogers and Christopher Cantwell, who co-created one of my all-time favorite shows Halt & Catch Fire. There’s been unfair comparisons to Stranger Things, due to it being a sci-fi story about tweens from the 80’s but that’s unfair as the comics started coming out BEFORE Stranger Things. Just one of those weird timing things. Anyway. The child actors are TREMENDOUS, ably supported by folks like Jason Mantzoukis and Ali Wong. It’s worth watching.
FYI, Brian K Vaughn has my personal favorite newsletter here on Substack. You should check it out.
I listened to the audiobook for Brian Gewirtz’s ‘There’s Just One Problem…’, his memoir of his time as a writer for WWE. It’s a lovely time capsule of that era of the company, getting into his stories around things like the original XFL, the John Cena/ Rock rivalry on both sides of the curtain, the Raw celebrity GM era (DID THAT REALLY GO ON FOR OVER A YEAR!?!?), Katie Vick, and having to defend himself in Wrestler’s Court. Worth a read or listen.
YOU GOOD?
Tuesday we drove up I-35 to Minneapolis for a dual work trip. Katy’s company is headquartered out of the Twin Cities and I was hand-delivering a large original painting to my biggest collector who also happens to be up there. Great timing!
It was a nonstop series of meetings for Katy as they prepare for a major pitch. I can’t say anything about it, it’s not my story to tell, but I’m really impressed with how important and valued she’s viewed by her bosses and coworkers. It’s rad to see others viewing her the way I do, finally.
On the drive back Thursday we were treated to an incredible amount of cloud porn. Katy snapped the above picture. It was like this FOR HOURS. Simply magnificent.
Love you more,
Rob
