WORDS  

During Edge’s new entrance at WrestleMania 38 I got a tweet saying they were excited for me to paint it and I replied, “Hard same.” The lighting, the pageantry, the gear designed by Jill Thompson, the all-new all-different Edge, every bit of it screamed for me to paint it! I love what Edge is doing now, making his entire career all one story. There’s bits of the Brood and the Ministry of Darkness, there’s the spite of the Rated R Superstar era, and the grit of when he returned but all wrapped up in one person.

I hope I got that across in the painting. There’s the color choices and the technique, but there’s also a slightly annoyed look in his eyes, saying, “I’ve done all of this and I don’t need your validation.”

WHAT I LIKED LAST WEEK  

The debut episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is pretty much perfect. It hit all of the notes, checked all of the boxes for what I love in Trek and still managed to do something wonderfully new. They have Pike getting counseled by two opposing people before making a big decision (the same as the trinity of Kirk, Spock and McCoy), there’s the morality plays and the social commentary mirrored through fantastical elements, but now also the added element of Pike haunted by knowing his horrible fate. It’s firmly set in Trek continuity but in a vein that’s not beholden to everything else. You’re enriched knowing these other details, but it’s not beholden to it nor what so many things fall into where the viewer is there just to say, “Hey, I get that reference!”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

What’s your favorite Edge moment? Mine was his return at the 2020 Royal Rumble. Not just because of how miraculous it was and what he overcame to do it, but because we had a party to watch and Katy got so excited she jumped up, tore her shirt off and ran around the house screaming.

At this year’s Rumble we got to finally tell him about that in person and he of course laughed and then said that night especially was different for him from what he had experienced in the ring before because of all of the videos he could watch afterwards of people having that same reaction. Like, he could hear the pop in person but for the first time thanks to social media he could see how much it meant to every individual person.

My second-favorite was hanging out backstage in St Paul, MN last year and talking music for a half hour, just listing off our favorites and how much they mean to us.

So, what’s your favorite? On or off-screen. Favorite moment in a match? A great time at a meet-and-greet? Did he tip great at the coffee shop? I want to hear about it!

YOU GOOD?  

For the first time in about a decade on Tuesday I went to a figure drawing session, working from a live model. It’s entirely different muscles being exercised from what I do in the studio and it felt great, especially after the awful Supreme Court news that came out Monday night.

I was in a heck of a funk and this was a very welcome diversion. It was a 2 hour session consisting of 10 one-minute poses, 2 five-minute poses, a fifteen-minute pose (that’s the one above) a twenty-minute pose and finally a thirty-minute pose. Each one is a different sort of challenge for the artist. Those first ten gesture drawings are there solely to loosen you up and then the succeeding longer ones are there to see how much you can do in the time allotted.

It all forced me to be in the moment, focusing just on the model and the art I was making and not so much thinking about the state of the world. It’s actually something I’ve been learning in therapy when things get a bit too heavy, to ground myself and bring my boundaries in close.

I have to do that, because I can’t be there for others if I’m a mess myself. And there’s so much work ahead of us to do.
