For my first-ever Deonna Purrazzo painting, I had a lot of fun using her elaborate entrance robe as a compositional element to frame her face. Subjects that are already visually interesting give me so much more to work with as an artist and I feel like this piece is a great example of that.

I want to say it was back in December I heard a story on NPR about making your own vinegar and it really intrigued me. Finally, yesterday I started my first batch of red wine vinegar. It’s a pretty easy process: You pour some red wine in a jar, strap a cheese cloth over the top and then just let it sit for a few weeks.

I took it a step further, since that didn’t seem to hard, and poured a little unpasteurized apple cider vinegar in to speed up the process of converting the alcohol to acid. Luckily, Katy had some with the ‘Mother of Vinegar’ (similar in concept to a sourdough starter) in it which will aid the process even more.

Ideally this will lead to these developing their own ‘Mothers’ that I can use for future vinegars. I should know in 2-3 weeks if they do. I’ll check in with you then!

There’s A TON of ways to make different kinds of vinegar and I’m really interested in experimenting with them once I get my process down. You can do things like infusing with different ingredients, creating a whole new level of flavor possibilities for dishes.
