CANDICE LERAE: Rob Schamberger Newsletter 20NOV22
I ain't afraid of no tomcats gonna fill my cup with poison.
Don't share this image until after 12PM CST. This is a perk for newsletter readers only. Be cool. Don't ruin it for everyone else.
Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. I walk on pins and needles and I see what they can do.
WORDS
I did some fun experimentation with this new Candice LeRae painting. I used what I call ‘double masking’ where I first applied some masking fluid to keep the white of the paper intact. After putting down a layer of watered-down colored ink I affixed some painter’s tape to create a rectangle in the upper left corner and then added another layer of thinned-out violet. This created a neat juxtaposition of organic and geometric forms with the color, before pulling up the masking fluid and finishing Candice’s form off with more violet ink and a little colored pencil for texture.
I’m definitely going to continue to experiment with multiple levels of masking in the future because I’m loving the results on this!
ICYMI, here's last week's Canvas 2 Canvas episode. Tomorrow's will go up on WWE's YouTube channel at 11AM CST!

Roman Reigns stands triumphant over Brock Lesnar, while Jimmy and Jey Uso heap rubble onto Brock as Corey Graves stands in shock beside an upturned wrestling ring and an unconscious Paul Heyman, and WWE Official Chad Patton tries desperately to make the carnage stop. It’s an image evocative of St George standing over the slain dragon, but told again for our modern times at WWE SummerSlam 2022.
I painted the crowd and the overall stadium in watercolor, while the deep shadows inside the barricades are done using black ink to create a sense of two separate worlds, a sort of Venn Diagram where the factual and the fictional overlap. There was also a bit of magenta added to the background around Roman’s figure to make him the clear focus of the composition.
I did my best to pay attention to every little detail and surface, like creating a different texture on the LED barricade versus the torn up floor mats or the canvas of the wrestling ring. I’m especially happy with the use of masking fluid on places like the referee’s shirt or the texture on the ring steps to make them feel real.
I really put in the effort to create for you my best work possible, and I thank you again for giving me the opportunity to do so.
The next Wrestling Landscape Painting will be announced soon, probably by the end of the month!
BLACK FRIDAY PLANS
Hey, it’s that time again isn’t it? Here’s what I have in mind for Schamberger Labs this year:
It’ll start at midnight EST (11PM CST) Thanksgiving night.
Free Shipping (up to $12) on orders of $40 or more. The code will be revealed in Thursday’s newsletter. This is my first time doing free shipping, if you can believe that!
Handmade numbered 8x10 Asuka linocut prints - They’ll automatically come free with every $50 purchased on November 25 (up to 4 per order), and can then be purchased for $50 the 26th through the 28th. If you just did the math, yes, it’s that good of a deal. These will only be available the 25th through the 28th. To the chagrin of people who have tried to buy past exclusives, you know that I’m serious about honoring my word on these so when they’re gone, yo, they’re gone.
First-ever Uncle Howdy print - This will go live at the same time that the sale starts to be fair to the folks who are anticipating this one. It may be a tad scary to see at midnight but do try to be brave, won’t you?
Paid subscribers’ exclusive 25% off code will work with the free shipping. I’m here for you.
**Please note, this is only for orders from Schamberger Labs and does not include orders from WWE Auction or other sources.**
Kima worked hard on this painting, as you can see.
YOU GOOD?
Does Twitter still exist? Depends on when you’re reading this.
Another solid week of working on my end, getting ready for Black Friday as well as WWE being closed on Thanksgiving so I needed to get next week’s Canvas 2 Canvas submitted early.
I did this week’s Candice LeRae and next week’s Uncle Howdy back to back, carved the three linoleum plates for the Asuka linocut print, and submitted the contract and invoice for the Very Important Secret Project which I think might be approved now. Time to wait for the client to do their thing on that one.
I’m debating taking today off or not. If I do work, it’ll be to start in (and maybe finish) the remarqued Undertaker prints. I like the idea of getting done early so that I can be a better help to Katy for getting the house cleaned up to host Thanksgiving dinner with my mom and stepdad.
Speaking of: STUFFING WAFFLES. I’m telling you about this every year, friend. You take your uncooked stuffing/dressing mix and scoop it into your waffle iron and cook it that way. Everything is the awesome crispy corner piece! Then you pile your other food on top, cover it with gravy and your life will be perfect. Try it, you’ll see.
Love you more,
Rob
