Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Where is my wave?
WORDS
The 2022 Lady Legends Wave of the Select Series, featuring Brie and Nikki Bella, Beth Phoenix and Lita! All four of these individuals radically changed what women’s wrestling in WWE can and should be in their own ways.
The Bella Twins, with Total Divas and Total Bellas brought in a massive new audience and behind the scenes created what became known as the WWE Women’s Evolution when the presentation of the ladies changed in a wonderfully positive way that we’re still experiencing today.
Beth Phoenix and Lita were both ahead of their times in so many ways. Lita came in with the Attitude Era when the women weren’t being presented in the most flattering light, shall we say, and through her charisma, look and in-ring prowess she was a rebel yell leading us towards progress. Beth was another anachronism for her time and a harbinger of the times to come for both the female competitors but for their fans as well.
Here's all of the Select Series paintings so far! This collection was inspired by and even takes its name from video game character select screens. The ultimate goal is to do paintings of everyone(!) under the WWE umbrella AND all of their looks. It's super ambitious but also a ton of fun to make
Pretty cool.

WHAT I LIKED LAST WEEK
The other night I caught up on Made for Love season two and find it to be quite a bit stronger than the first season, which I also enjoyed a lot. The high concept, of a woman held hostage in a loveless marriage with a tech billionaire and fighting for her freedom and identity is still firmly at the core but done in a way that further explores the world set up in the first season, getting some equally fun and terrifying and heartbreaking moments as a result.
Also enjoying the third season of Barry so far. They’re giving some more time to the fact that Bill Hader’s Barry is a, you know, psychopath. When the humor is sheared away he’s a terrifying human being and seeing it through the eyes of Henry Winkler’s career-defining (AAAYYYY! Sit on it!) performance as Gene Cousineau is wildly original.
The Defenders: There Are No Rules by Al Ewing and Javier Rodriguez is a thing to behold. Ewing’s story is firmly in the Jim Starlin cosmic Marvel vein, but man Rodriguez’ art is (pun-intended) out of this world. He’s doing some next-level cartooning, design and sequential storytelling that’s some of the freshest work happening in comics today. It’s like a mix of Starlin, Paolo Rivera and JH Williams III but also completely unique.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK
What’s your first favorite pro wrestling moment?
Not your all-time favorite, but the one where you said, yeah, I love this crazy stuff.
No lie, for me it was Big Boss Man chaining Big Show’s dad’s coffin to the back of the Blues Brothers car and dragging it around in the middle of a cemetery as horrified onlookers were powerless to stop it, with Big Show hanging onto the coffin. Yes, this was real.
Katy, please make sure this happens at my funeral, too. If you really want to honor me.
SCHAMBERGER LABS: EPISODE 2!
The second episode of Schamberger Labs! It’s a hybrid process video/ podcast/ shop talk/ hangout where you get to watch the progress I’m making on a major new painting of Charlotte Flair. Instead of just watching paint dry, though, I’m joined by awesome folks each week to talk not just about the painting but also what we’re enjoying at the moment. Positive, fun, good-natured stuff that we all need right now.
For the second episode I’m joined again by my wife Katy as we talk technique, have some drinks and laugh!
Current progress on my major new painting of Charlotte Flair. Paid tier members can see each episode a week early! Fireworks!
YOU GOOD?
I’m back to being good, I think. I got hit with a nasty case of food poisoning or a stomach bug Tuesday night through Wednesday, knocking me out and zapping me of energy for a few days. I hydrated throughout so it passed as quickly as possible but man, I really couldn’t spare those days and am now hustling to stay on top of deadlines. The downside to being a professional artist and business owner: No one covers for you when you’re unable to work!
Beyond that, I moved my studio down from the attic to our sunroom on Tuesday morning now that it’s warmer. It’s a really gorgeous space to work from, surrounded by greenery and life. We’ve got a Japanese maple right outside one of the windows with blazing red leaves at the moment that’s stunning. Last Sunday we also moved the house plants outside and golly I love the morning ritual of going out to water them every day. They like it, too.
Love you more,
Rob
