Hi. My name's Rob Schamberger. I'm that guy who paints rasslers. And other stuff. Give me the change you said would do me good.
WORDS
I enjoy that right out of the gate Ava Raine is not what we expect. With all of her family connections it seemed natural for her to go with one of those obvious routes but instead she’s debuted as a member of The Schism in a radically unexpected role. Defying expectations is an exciting thing and a great way for her to enter her WWE career, in my opinion.
For this, my first portrait of her I created it with watercolor and colored pencil, making something that speaks to her by defying expectations of what my artistic approach might be. Using a red and orange layer of watercolor to create richness, I then used red and purple colored pencil to highlight her distinctive red eye in a haunting way.
ICYMI, here's last week's Canvas 2 Canvas episode. Tomorrow's will go up on WWE's YouTube channel at 11AM CST!

SCHAMBERGER LABS: THE SERIES!
This week, I add Jimmy Uso and a knocked out Brock Lesnar to this epic Wrestling Landscape Painting from SummerSlam 2022! Finally a main character is added to the composition, right?
Here’s how it looks so far:
About two weeks left!
YOU GOOD?
Today is Katy and I’s 12th wedding anniversary! It still feels like I was in high school longer than I’ve been with her. It’s flown by, even though we’ve both done so much and grown so much, both individually and together. We’re radically different people, but have fortunately managed to grow together instead of apart. Marriage is hard work, it’s work we put in every day and we’re constantly looking to be better partners for each other tomorrow than we are today, but I feel like the work is worth it for us.
Most of the week Katy and I were relaxing on the beach on our first vacation since January 2020. Ate a lot, drank a lot, and didn’t do much of anything else. It was spectacular, honestly.
I’ll bring this up in therapy tomorrow, but most of Tuesday I was really in my own head and I think it was because on some level I realized just how unhappy I’d been for so long, having experienced a couple days of genuine happiness. By the evening I snapped out of it, especially after meeting up with my friend Andy for dinner and drinks.
I told you we only ate and drank on this trip.
Wednesday was great again, and then we flew back home Thursday afternoon after getting our feet in the water one more time. It was pretty much back to work once we got through the door as I need to get next week’s Sami Zayn piece done before I’m back on the road later this coming week, but that’s cool.
Friday I delivered a round of revisions for the Big Secret Important Project, finished editing together tomorrow’s Canvas 2 Canvas, and then penciled out the Duchamp-inspired Sami Zayn piece. To round out the day I packaged up a few Schamberger Labs dot com and WWE Auction orders.
Yesterday I dropped off those packages, got a couple coats done on the Honorary Uce, wrote this here newsletter and edited together today’s episode of Schamberger Labs. I’ll work today and hopefully finish up the Sami piece and then I’m in pretty good shape for the coming week.
That’s how it normally goes around a vacation, scrambling to get everything done ahead of time so that things can run smoothly while I’m gone and then more scrambling when I’m back to catch up on the things I couldn’t schedule out. The world keeps spinning and that’s the nature of things, right?
I guess?
This Sami Zayn piece is going to be rad, though. It’s unlike anything I’ve done before in a pretty exciting way. He’s dancing in it, too.
For the foreseeable future I’m pulling back on using Twitter for anything other than promoting my work and am going to do the more personal engagement through here for now. Substack just introduced a new chat feature through their app that maybe we can play around with, like a Raw watch-along or the like. Ways we can stay close are always worth looking into. You’re special to me and I don’t want to lose what we’ve got. You’re pretty neat.
Love you more,
Rob
